Getting Checkpoint QR Codes

Once a tour is set up with checkpoints and optionally checklists, the next thing to do is to make it easy for start the inspection. The inspections are usually performed on mobile devices such as a tablet or a smartphone.

There are two ways to start an inspection.

The first way is to simply go to the tour record and click the "Start Tour" action. This will tell you which asset or location to visit first. When you arrive you'll select that checkpoint from the list and click "Checkpoint". Then it will either tell you the next checkpoint to visit, or it will go through the series of checklist items.

An alternative, simpler way to start a tour is to create a QR code or NFC tag for each checkpoint, and then just scan or tap that tag with your phone. This is what we'll be discussing in this section.

To do this, just go to the checkpoint record, under the tour, and click the QR Code link at the top of the checkpoint:

Once you click the QR Code link, it will show a QR code page that you can print:

You can click in the gray box at the top of the QR code to enter in some text to include in the tag. Then just print it, or take a screenshot (alt+PrtScrn keys) and paste it into a label document for printing. You can then stick it somewhere on or near the asset that you wish to be scanned.

An even simpler option is to use an NFC tag. These are small, quite inexpensive to buy and conveniently stick onto assets without being too conspicuous. With an appropriate NFC-enabled smartphone, you can then simply tap the tag to bring up the checkpoint screen - no scanning or special software involved at all.

The only software you'll need is to "write" to the NFC tag in order to set it up. All you will do is write a URL to the NFC tag - the URL you'll use is the one you see on the QR Code link, usually a shortened URL that links directly to the checkpoint action for that checkpoint.

Once this is set up, it'll make it a breeze to perform your inspections. The more inspections you have, the more knowledge you have, the more secure and reliable your organization will be.
